Plano Considers New Regulations for Short-Term Rentals

The City of Plano, Texas, is considering new regulations for short-term rentals, such as those listed on platforms like Airbnb and Vrbo. These regulations would require hosts to register with the city and obtain a permit, as well as adhere to certain safety and noise requirements.

The proposed regulations come after complaints from residents about noise, traffic, and safety issues related to short-term rentals in residential neighborhoods. Some residents have expressed concern about the impact of short-term rentals on property values and the character of their neighborhoods.

The new regulations would require hosts to provide contact information to neighbors and post a notice in their rental listing with the city permit number. Hosts would also be required to provide a floor plan of the rental unit, install smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms, and have an emergency contact available to guests.

While some residents support the proposed regulations, others argue that they could have a negative impact on their ability to earn income from short-term rentals. They also point out that many hosts already follow safety and noise guidelines and that the proposed regulations could be burdensome and expensive.

The City Council is expected to vote on the proposed regulations in the coming weeks. If approved, they would take effect in July 2023
