Lewis Capaldi's Brave Struggle with Tourette's Syndrome

Lewis Capaldi Shares Struggle with Tourette’s Syndrome

Scottish singer-songwriter Lewis Capaldi has opened up about his struggles with Tourette’s syndrome in a new interview with GQ Hype. Capaldi revealed that he was diagnosed with the neurological disorder when he was six years old and still deals with it on a daily basis.

Capaldi described the physical and verbal tics that come with Tourette’s as “like being possessed by a demon.” He explained that he often suppresses his tics in public, which can lead to painful muscle spasms, and that they get worse when he’s stressed or anxious.

Capaldi also discussed the challenges of performing with Tourette’s, particularly during his rise to fame. “There’s no moment where you get to go offstage and go, ‘Oh, thank God that’s over,’” he said. “It’s not something I can just put down and walk away from.”

Despite the difficulties, Capaldi said that he has learned to accept his Tourette’s as a part of who he is. “I’m quite lucky in the sense that I don’t see it as a hugely negative thing,” he said. “It’s just part of me and I wouldn’t be me without it.”

Capaldi is currently working on his second album, the follow-up to his 2019 debut, Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent. He recently released the singles “Before You Go” and “Someone You Loved.”
